Prepare Your Garden for Winter: Simple Tips to Get Ahead!
I know, we’re not ready to say the “W” word just yet—winter. But, like it or not, it’s time to start thinking about getting our gardens ready for the colder months ahead. Don’t worry, these simple tips will help your garden survive and thrive, ready for spring!
1. Pull Weeds Before They Go to Seed
As we head into fall, pull out those weeds! If they go to seed, you’ll be fighting more of them next year.
2. Decrease Watering, but Don’t Stop!
While you should cut back on watering in the fall, don’t stop altogether. Plants stressed from drought are less hardy in the winter. Keep watering until temperatures dip consistently into the 30s.
3. Remove Damaged or Rotting Foliage
Removing dead or damaged foliage helps prevent disease and mildew from spreading. This step will save you trouble in the long run.
4. What to Cut Back?
Plants like hostas, phlox, lilies, peonies, catmint, bearded iris, columbine, and yarrow benefit from being cut back. Pruning these plants 6 to 8 inches above ground helps them regrow stronger in the spring.
5. Leave Seed Heads for the Birds
For perennials that have seed heads, leave them intact. They provide a winter food source for birds, adding a natural touch to your garden’s ecosystem.
6. Dig Up Tender Bulbs
Bulbs like canna lilies, dahlias, and gladiolus won’t survive freezing temperatures. Dig them up and store them in a cool, dry place until spring.
7. Add Compost and Mulch
Mulching around your perennial beds adds nutrients and protects the roots from harsh winter conditions. It’s like giving your garden a cozy blanket!
8. Protect Your Trees and Shrubs
If you have deer-favorite plants like arborvitaes, consider wrapping or covering them for protection.
9. Aerate, Seed, and Fertilize Your Lawn
Mid to late October is the perfect time to aerate your lawn, reseed bare patches, and apply fertilizer. These steps will encourage a healthy, lush lawn when spring rolls around.
Follow these steps to keep your garden in top shape through winter and ready to bounce back when the warmer weather arrives!
